Active Release Techniques (ART)

Active Release Techniques, or ART, is a patented and unique method of therapy that treats the body’s soft tissues through a combination of manipulation and movement. During an ART session, the certified practitioner examines the injured soft tissues and develops custom treatment plans which include both applied pressure by the practitioner and active movements by the patient.  This combination of therapies aims at releasing scar tissue or adhesions in the muscle or fascia (the smooth covering around a muscle) that have developed over time due to overuse and/or injuries.  These adhesions prevent the muscle from moving smoothly with surrounding tissues, which can cause many problems in the body, ultimately leading to pain and activity limitations.

Active Release Techniques is different than other soft tissue treatments and requires specialty training and certification.  Glenwood Orthopedic Center is lucky to offer ART by Mike McCann, one of our highly skilled and experienced Athletic Trainers.

ART can be used to treat a wide variety of problems with muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves.  Some examples of conditions that can benefit from ART include –

  • Shin splints
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Peroneal tendinitis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Shoulder strains
  • Bursitis
  • Tennis elbow
  • Sciatic nerve pain/sciatica
